Obituary of Roland Otto Krause

Following a hard-fought battle with cancer, Roland Otto Krause passed away peacefully on May 7, 2020 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Roland was born on December 28, 1946 in Schwaebisch-Hall, Germany to Otto and Anna (Schlupikov) Krause. Otto and Anna moved their young family from Bremerhafen, Germany to Petawawa, Ontario in early 1950. They later settled and continued raising their family in Pembroke, Ontario. Roland attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Commerce. He held summer jobs at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories and began his professional working career at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) in Mississauga, Ontario. He travelled to Bathurst, New Brunswick in 1972 to deliver a presentation on "Canada’s Nuclear Story". Roland spoke to Ann’s Physics students at Bathurst High School and the rest is history. Roland and Ann married on July 27, 1974 and settled into their family home in Fredericton, where Roland worked at NB Power for 31 years and Ann continued her teaching career in Fredericton. Roland and Ann welcomed and together raised their three wonderful children, Michael Roland Krause, Peter Andrew Krause, and Christine Ann (Krause) Wood. During his nearly two-year fight with cancer, Roland demonstrated tremendous bravery and determination while maintaining his widely known optimism and positivity. His strength of character will serve as an inspiration to his family. His unique ability to carry a room full of strangers and to make everyone in the room comfortable will never be forgotten. Over the years as his kids participated in sports he definitely made his presence known (in both home and away games) by leading numerous cheers to boost the team spirit and gain momentum. A long time member of St. Paul’s United Church, Roland was active on several committees and he was a member of the choir. He held various leadership roles in the Boys Scouts of Canada and was a member of the Epsilon Y’s Service Club. Roland is survived by his wife Ann (Morrison) Krause of almost 46 years; his two sisters, Irene Shaw and Lilly Herrmann; his sons Michael (Jessica) and Peter (Janis) of Oakville, Ontario; his daughter Christine (James) of Fredericton, NB, and his beloved grandchildren Benjamin (11), Ashlynn (10), Jeffrey (9), Lilly (9), Olivia (8), Emma (6), Ethan (5) and Addison (4). Roland was predeceased by his infant brother Richard, and two brothers-in-law Campbell Shaw and Fred Herrmann. The family wishes to thank Dr. Andrea Hickey, Dr. Jillian Goodyear, Dr. Ghadeer Anan, Dr. Jennifer Gillis-Doyle, the Palliative Care Unit at the DECH, and the Extra-Mural staff for the tremendous care and support they provided Roland throughout his battle with cancer. A visitation at McAdam’s and a memorial service at St. Paul’s United Church, Fredericton will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to one of Roland’s favourite causes would be very much appreciated: Prostate Cancer Canada (https://www.prostatecancer.ca/), St. Paul’s United Church (http://www.stpaulsunited.ca/), or the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation (https://www.chalmersfoundation.com/).
