Obituary of Elizabeth Whamond
Elizabeth Whamond (nee Wandless) passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, June 9, 2020. At the age of 70, she spent her final days at Hospice House in Fredericton, following a number of years living with numerous health complications. She was born in Fredericton on Christmas Day, 1949 to the late Ruby (Alexander) and Francis Wandless. Her sibling, George, was a caring and supportive brother until his passing a few years ago.
Liz was with family in her final moments, and is survived by her devoted partner in life of 45 years, Ken. Her spirit endures in her three sons, Peter (Connie), Scott (Joe), and Alex (Jumana). Also, she leaves behind her beloved granddaughter Ruby, her niece Teri Wandless, Marley (Connie’s daughter), and several cousins. She will be remembered fondly by her sisters-in-law Wendy Anthieren (Lenny), Diana Buist (Neil), and Joey Wandless, as well as her brother-in-law Randy Whamond (Marj).
Her family, friends, and colleagues remember her welcoming and generous nature. Liz could strike up a conversation with anyone and develop an instant and genuine bond. Being a social and truly nice person, she was prompt to joyful laughter and a bright smile.
Throughout her life, Liz took on challenges with enthusiasm and never let anything stand in her way. Her motivation was to make a difference in other peoples’ lives. She spent 30+ years supporting forestry students and faculty at UNB, always there to lend a hand and encourage.
After beating breast cancer in 1993, she worked with other survivors and allies to build local and national networks and bring patient voices to change health care for the better. She spent countless hours contributing to Canada’s cancer control strategy and worked with the international community to establish high-quality information for making health decisions. At every step, Liz stood up for women needing and deserving the best treatment and care.
Passion drove Liz. She loved travel – her passport filled with stamps from across the Americas, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. She took on adventures like white-water rafting and parasailing. In later years, the Miata she bought on eBay explored the roads of the Maritimes and northeastern states. Her garden, lovingly planted by Ken, overflows with hostas, daylilies and rose bushes. Liz adored animals and she was most often the family member plotting for the arrival of a new pet. She was inseparable from her cherished puppy Bella until the end. She lived for the happiness of her sons and granddaughter, and all others that welcomed her into their circle.
In everything, Liz was brave, kind, and positive. She had such a big heart and joyous sense of humour. We will miss her.
The family expresses its sincere thanks Dr. Meaghan O’Brien and to the staff of 4 West and 3 East at the DECH and at the Hospice House for the loving and compassionate care she received.
When circumstances permit, a gathering will take place to celebrate our beautiful memories of a life well lived. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice House in Fredericton would be greatly appreciated.
