I had a friendship with Maria for 43 years. She was our next door neighbour on Aberdeen St. We will miss her deeply. A recent memory: The last time Najat and I saw Maria was for her 95th birthday on June 26. After a nice party in the living room of Farraline Home, we went back to her room. She told us how she was and I asked her to sing us her latest song. She had been singing every night with Heather, the cook at Farraline, and loving it. The latest song was Arrivederci Roma. According to Heather, Maria had learned it when she was four years old. Maria had rememorized the words which Heather had googled. Maria was able to sing the song to us with the melody and all of the words.

Najat here, I just wanted to share a few more words in Maria's memory. Maria owed my family nothing, but gave so much of herself to us. She always showed up to our birthdays, Christmases, Thanksgivings, graduations, and more. It meant a lot to have someone outside the family show such interest in us and be consistently there for us. I hope we were able to be there for her as well. I learned at her sister Tilley's memorial service that their father had the trait of 'effervescence'. I believe it was apparent Maria had this trait as well. I would also say that she was adventurous, imaginative and had an artist's soul. Thank you for letting me share a bit more to pay tribute to Maria. I'm so sorry to hear of your family's loss. Maria spoke of you all fondly and loved to show me pictures on our visits over the last few years. Maria was a big part of our family and we celebrated many occasions together. Our daughter, Jordyn, became quite attached to her as well. I have tons of memories of times with Maria - gardening, cooking, playing with her cat who meant so much to her, playing my childhood games, creating mini plays, art and music. Oh how she loved Frank Sinatra! I so wish I could be there tomorrow but we will be overseas. Otherwise, I'd be there with many more memories to share, to share your grief and to celebrate her life.

I met Maria just a few years ago while visiting my Aunt at Farralane Place...my sister and I, with her twin granddaughters, would visit every Friday...Maria and my Aunt lived in the same section so she was always part of the visit too...she would delight us with stories of her life and the twins loved her....they would just be coming from art class at the art gallery across the street, so that was a topic of many conversations with Maria.....I am saddened to see of her passing, and grateful to have met her...my condolences to her family... In life, there are several impacts; people, experiences and influences. We don't always realize that those influences made us who we are today. Maria was one of those figures in my life. She had a knack with children and I benefited from her skill. Not too many women of her era would be willing to invent a story about a family of mice that may or may not have resembled an Italian saga for the enjoyment of a seven year old. Thank you Maria for nurturing my imagination. Rest in Peace. Bless your heart, you have wings now.
