Obituary of Cynthia Mary Jean (Sloat) McKinnon

With sadness the family announces the passing of Cyndi McKinnon on August 22, 2022, at the age of 70 after a period of failing health. Cyndi was born in Fredericton, NB, the daughter and eldest of four children of the late Lester Barr Sloat and Shirley Barbara (Shaw) Sloat. Cyndi is survived by her beloved sons Aron William Kozak (Anne Sophie Kaalen) of Norway, and Colin Terrence McKinnon of Fredericton; her siblings Ken Sloat (Jayne), Jennifer Sloat and Elizabeth Sloat (Fred); grandchildren Oskar, Max, and Stella; her niece Lindsay, nephew Andrew and their children, as well as dear friends, and many fond relatives. Cyndi was raised on the family Nethervue Farm and after a number of years in Toronto and Ottawa was able to return and establish her residence again on “The Hill” overlooking the Saint John River Valley, where she enjoyed the company of family and friends until her illness. Cyndi was caring and kind, and her thoughtfulness of others was reflected through many gifts and other demonstrations of kindness and consideration. She loved unconditionally her children, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and siblings. She was an avid reader and always attuned to local and national news and events. She was extremely knowledgeable in general, but her knowledge of plants and gardening was prodigious, and she was a constant source of information to aspiring gardeners among her family and friends. Her gifts of plants to others will serve as a living memorial to Cyndi and her love of gardening. Special thanks to caregiver Heidi Slipp for her care and companionship during Cyndi’s illness; the Serenity Wellness Agency; Extramural nurses, and in Cyndi’s final days, the doctors, nurses and staff of 4 South-West at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Committal will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Fredericton Hospice House, or a nature conservancy or other charity of the donor’s choice.
