Tony and I were saddened to learn of Sam’s passing. It was only last week that we were reminiscing about Smokey Mountain and the good steaks and special celebrations we enjoyed there. Sam’s name came up and Tony wondered how he was doing. So it is with fond memories that we send our condolences to all Sam’s loved ones at this difficult time. Rest In Peace, Sam

Our Patey family grew up in Labrador City with Uncle Sam, Aunt Meg and our cousins Shona and Michael. They were a god-send for us to have around as family to be able to celebrate the holidays throughout the year. We always had a great time eating and drinking and sharing stories with each other. Uncle Sam and Aunt Meg were always our safe space and we loved the times we shared playing cards and hungry hippos as kids. A saying Uncle Sam bestowed upon us that in this day he denies......is, "Why would I need on my head, what grows abundantly on my.......". !!!?? Great sense of humour!!!! Uncle Sam will be missed but has left behind so many found memories.
Myself, Denise and Mom and Dad were able to make a road trip last fall to visit with Uncle Sam and Aunt Meg and we were so fortunate to have been able to spend this time together
Love to all the family from Harold and Eleanor and the Patey girls, Denise , Gina, Stephanie, Daina and Natasha. And ofcourse, the extended family as well.

With heavy hearts we send our deepest condolences. We have so many great memories of time spent with Sam ,especially
On Smokey Mt. Friday steak nights, Sunday family steak nights . One particular memory comes to mind is when Sam travelled to
Marble Mountain with Smokey Racing Team . They all wore the famous bright yellow Jackets. Elesha was a younger racer at the time and would miss the under gate in the slalom race course. Kiwi came up with the idea to stand Sam by the under gate in his yellow jacket to highlight the location of the tricky gate!! Granny Green was another highlight !
May Sam’s special memories help ease your pain, Meg,Mike,Shona and family. Wish we could be there tomorrow for the celebration of Sam’s life. Sending hugs to you all.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Sam. I have such fond memories of him from growing up in Labrador City. I spent a lot of time with the Simms family over the years and their house often felt like a second home. I was first introduced to his daughter Shona by her older brother Mike and my older sister. We were all skiing together and the older siblings dumped the two younger ones off on each other so they didn’t have to ski with us. It was from that day on that our friendship grew. I loved going over to Shona’s house and never passed up an invitation to eat supper with them if Sam was having a BBQ. He cooked up an awesome steak and I loved steak! Sam was always so kind and funny too. I always enjoyed talking to him. He used to have to rescue me at times from their cat during sleepovers because I was afraid of it. I remember hanging out in their basement and Sam’s bar area was so cool. He let Shona and I do various projects over the years down there like when we decided to make haunted mailboxes as Halloween costumes. Sam was always ready to lend a hand if we needed it. He was a big part of our ski racing lives as well. Sam could he found helping out at races, gatekeeping, cheering us on as we would race past him and handing out medals or rewards at the events. He was also an awesome chaperone during our out of town races. I still remember him driving one of the vans under extremely icy and slippery conditions. I was scared but felt safe with him at the wheel. He was always so calm. I can still picture him in those bright yellow and pink ski jackets that we had and it was great having him as part of the “team”. I remember the Simms family spending time with us at our cottage in NB and during the Christmas holidays and I loved our time with them. My heart goes out to Meg, Shona and Mike during this difficult time. My sincere condolences to all of you. Sending you big hugs from the west coast.

From Comox, BC, it is difficult for us to accept that Sam is no longer with us. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and trust that your strength will see you through this time of grief.
In looking back over our working lives in Labrador City and retirement time in Fredericton, the friendship between our two families was significant and has proven to be lasting. Smokey Mountain was a major part of our lives from the ski racing of our four children to our own ski activities. There was always time for the Christmas Eve visits as well as viewing time for the Star Wars movies. Retirement time found us together in Fredericton where golf took over from skiing.
When we decided to move to Comox, we were most pleased that Meg & Sam decided to make it a two van event and we made the 6000 km trip in convoy. It was a lot of fun especially when we got lost in the West Edmonton Mall.
We have included a few pictures to bring back some precious memories. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. Sam will live in our hearts.
Sincerely, Bob & Margaret Martin

Oh this it is so heartbreaking to learn of Sam’s passing. I had the pleasure of working and befriending Sam when we worked together on the belt crew in the Pellet Plant at IOC. We “worked” many a day together conquering those challenging New York Times crossword puzzles as we sat around our lunch table in the belt shack! Also shared a good number of rounds of golf with Sam and that was entertainment at its best! I clearly remember his last day of work in the Pellet Plant as I chauffeured him up through the laydown area driving the old Belt Crew pickup with the horn blaring and heralding his much deserved retirement! To Meg and family I offer my sincerest condolences but take solace in knowing that all who knew your beloved Sam are mourning with you in a solidarity of friendship. Life’s work well done and God’s blessings upon you all.

My family has the privilege of spending holiday dinners with Meg & Sam. One Christmas a number of years ago we randomly decided to host a cat-themed Christmas turkey dinner. I thought everyone would be game for it, except for Sammy. But Sam shocked us all, and dressed head-to-toe in cats, and he took the award for best cat spirit. That was a very special memory for myself and my family, because when Sam has a good time, everyone has a good time. We will miss Sam very dearly. With heavy hearts; Jen, John, Sara & Josie Kennedy

Many good memories of Sam. We golfed most days at the same tee time as Sam's foresome an usually got together at the 19th hole to do as Sam put it "Do what we do best". We shared a love of old time Country music at our weekly guitar sessions at Wayne's place. I was pleased to help Sam perform at his 70th birthday party along with Joe Barriault but it was Sam's "onion sisters" who stole the show.
