Obituary of Robert Whalen

Professor Robert Whalen, 1931-2022

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Professor Robert Whalen on the morning of December 28th at the Dr. Everett Chalmers hospital in Fredericton.

Bob Whalen was born in Boiestown, New Brunswick on October 17, 1931 and graduated from FHS in 1948. He studied at UNB and then taught at St Thomas University in Chatham. He returned to study at the Sorbonne in Paris before accepting an appointment at UNB leading to a 37 year academic career.

He taught English and then French and served as chairman of the Department of Romance Languages and then of the French Department. He served for many years as the director of the École des langues, and was the founder of the UNB Arts Centre. As a consummate promoter of the arts and of bicultural dialogue, and former research associate with the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism, Professor Whalen specialized in comparative literature among English Canadian, French Canadian and Acadian authors.

A gifted writer, director and actor Robert was a long-time adjudicator and supporter of the New Brunswick drama festival and the founder of the Fredericton Chapter of les Jeunesses Musicales du Canada. His legacy lives on in the English Language Program at UNB and STU, a program which he helped found and direct for many years, and also in the mission and outreach of the Centre Communautaire Sainte-Anne, an institution he helped design and build and which became the model for minority language education and cultural development in linguistic minority communities across Canada.

More than his great work as a lecturer, educator, university administrator and community builder Dad will be warmly remembered for his great wit, his gift of song and mellow baritone voice, his ability to blend down home hospitality with impeccable good taste, his unrelenting generosity and for the human kindness that was the hallmark of all of his every-day interactions.

Above all else Bob was a supportive and devoted husband, a truly amazing father and much loved uncle, grandfather, colleague and friend.

A long-time parishioner at St Dunstan’s parish and at Sainte-Anne des Pays-Bas, Robert was a devout catholic, former president of the Newman Society, member of the Chevaliers de Colomb and of the Catholic Family Movement.

He lived with Parkinson’s Disease for the past twenty-seven years and is a past president of the Fredericton chapter of the Parkinson Society. Despite the physical challenges this presented him, he faced them with quiet resolve and the constant support of his loving wife Claudia. Together they continued to see the beauty and wonder in each day.

He is predeceased by his parents George Whalen and Bridgee Malone, by his siblings Patricia Crawford, William Whalen, Paul Whalen, Bonnie Kennedy and son Georges Flanagan-Whalen and survived by his wife of 62 years, Claudia (Theriault) Whalen their  children Sibylle (Roger Filion), Sylvia (Cameron Smith), Christian (May Khoury), Jocelyne (Paul Mills) and daughter-in-law Ann Flanagan-Whalen, as well as by his fourteen grandchildren, Madeleine (Tyler McCready), Marielle, Myriam (Devin Kearney), Lara, Katherine, Sophie, Matthias, Owen, Samuel, Hayden, Nicolas, Gillianne, Alexandra and Isabelle, two great-grandchildren Evelyn and William and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

The family wishes to convey their profound gratitude to his most recent caregivers, Mary Lou, Nita, Kim, Maureen, Cathy and Denis as well as to those who preceded them and who made it possible for him to remain in the home he and Claudia had created and loved. They are also deeply grateful for the care received from his Family Physician Dr. Jeffrey Barton as well as the staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.

Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 6:00 - 8:00 pm at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, in Fredericton, on Sunday, January 1st and a Funeral Mass will be held at St Dunstan’s Church on January 2nd at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Georges Flanagan-Whalen Memorial Fund at the University of New Brunswick (https://www.unb.ca/giving/ways/index.html).
