Obituary of Christofer Balram
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. B. Christofer Balram announces his sudden death on March 16, 2023 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He was born in Guyana on March 8, 1949 to the late Balram and Somaria Maraj.
Dr. Balram lived in Guyana before immigrating to Canada to attend school at Mount Allison University and later Memorial University in Newfoundland. It was there that he studied medicine and gained a passion for epidemiology. He was instrumental in developing the first epidemiology program for students at Memorial University. He further went on to teach medicine at Dalhousie University before moving to Fredericton, New Brunswick to lead the Provincial Epidemiology Department.
He is survived by his wife, Jennella Balram; son, Christofer Balram; daughter, Adele Lundy (Greg); two grandsons, Benjamin and Cole; and his granddaughter, Claire. He is also survived by his brothers, David (Bibi), Jack, Basil, Peter (Seeta), Trevor (Cindy), Doshan (Latchmin), and Bill; his sister Vedo (Val), as well as many extended family members. He was brother-in-law to Trudy (Stan), Denis (Marilyn), Sylla (Rudy), Maria, Winston (Sue), Visham (Anne Marie), Kenny (Margot), and many nephews and nieces.
Dr. Balram shared a unique passion for golf and would often spend most of his post retirement days on the golf course with friends and colleagues. When not on the golf course, he enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter and grandsons, and relaxing at home with his wife, Jennella.
A special thanks to Ambulance New Brunswick and the staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital ER and Intensive Care Unit for their care and compassion.
A visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Monday, March 20 from 2:00 – 4: 00 pm and 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Further to Dr. Balram’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at Kingswood Golf Club on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice in Dr. Balram’s name would be appreciated by the family.
