Dean Peter Kent was my professor in the 1991-92 academic year, when I transferred from UNBSJ to complete my final year in Fredericton. He was an excellent educator and an all-round nice guy, and his class was unquestionably one of the most enjoyable for all the students—so much so that it made me wish I had transferred before I did. Dean Kent was very supportive of me both at UNB and after I graduated, as he went out of his way to try and help me network with other professors of history when I went away to graduate school in the US. I only just learned of his passing today and wanted to express my condolences to his family and also to let them know how much I admired and respected Professor Kent.

Peter Kent taught me history in Montreal in 1964. It was Canadian history and he made it come alive; so that I came to think of history itself as a necessary discipline and worthy vocation. I have spent a lifetime teaching and writing but I still mark the beginning of my professional life with his mentoring. I was saddened, of course to hear his death, but I would like to believe that he knew what a profound affect he had on so many students. He changed my life at a time when I needed changing. I think of him with enormous affection and gratitude.

I was very sad to hear of Peter’s passing. He was a mentor to me and showed me the way forward through his meticulous scholarship and get-to-it attitude. He was also a conscientious thesis supervisor and helped to make UNB a wonderful experience for me. I know that he did the same for many others as well. My favourite recollection is of a trip that he, I and Marc Milner made to Washington, D.C. to look at records in the National Archives. This trip (c. 1982) is still inscribed in my memory as an epic experience. Peter was a paragon of wisdom, good humour and common sense. We stayed in touch and met whenever he was in Victoria. I’ll miss him greatly. My condolences to his family.

I have so many wonderful memories of Skip, from down through the years, as one of his scouts, as a fellow scout leader, as a student in his Faculty, as Group Committee colleague, and most importantly, as his friend.
To pick just one memory, I’ll choose what will surely be an enduring one from just a couple of months ago. It was at the Going Up Ceremony for 1st St. Margaret’s scouting group at Odell Park. And it was shortly after he and I had finished leading a great campfire. Everyone was standing around at mug up, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Leaders and parents, and as he stood beside the still glimmering embers of the fire, Skip looked around at all the happy, smiling faces, and he absolutely glowed with pride and joy.
I imagine this was a time where he could see there was continuity, not just from Beavers to Cubs, and on up, but there was continuity from year to year, decade to decade, generation to generation. All the things he had helped to build, from that wonderful scene at Odell Lodge, to History 3810 at the Spanish Steps, they would all last for a long, long time.
A couple of years ago, Skip mailed off to me a book by Hugh McKervill about he and Skip’s good friend Tom Murphy and their canoeing adventures around New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Its title speaks to the march of time, but it could also speak to the legacy Skip leaves behind. The book is called “Like An Ever-rolling Stream”.
Skip was a wonderful, wonderful man, and I am going to miss him very much. My deepest sympathies go out to Wendy and Darryl and the rest of the family.

Shocked and saddened to return from Europe to this news. As a longtime collaborator of Peter's on his intrepid travel study forays to Rome (along with Tom Goud and others contributing to this memorial) I have wonderful memories of his patient, firm and impeccably organized skills in running that program - skills which he displayed as Dean of Arts and at 1st St Margarets with equal aplomb. Our deepest condolences go out to Wendy and his family.

My deepest condolences and sympathy to Wendy and Peter's family on his passing. He was very much a respected scholar and leader in the community for a multitude of reasons going back many years. For me personally I have had the honour of having him provide me mentorship, leadership, a role model and since the early 1950's through Scouting. We have maintained contact through-out the years including in more recent years via monthly Zoom meetings with the Miramichi Pioneers. As the esteemed leader of this group of scouting friends he provided a calm voice of guidance to all of us. The many memories of him from almost overloading his Land Rover enroute to various missions and camps, gatherings on the Miramichi and dinners at several locations including his Inn on the bank of the Saint John River will be forever with me. Forever with me Peter.

As a member of the Psychology Department at UNB I knew Peter well in his role as Dean of Arts. While I know that he had all the usual requisite skills of administrators, it is more important to point out that Peter was always kind, friendly, and eager to help. He motivated us in positive ways and he inspired us in our work. While he will be greatly missed, he made it count while he was here. Liz and I send our deepest condolences to all the family.

My 33 years as Professor of Sociology at UNB was so enhanced by Peter Kent's interest in and support of whatever I endeavoured to try out. He was compassionate Dean, one who was willing to learn from everyone around him. I recall seeing my art project "The Wooden Bird" catalogue sitting for many years on the coffee table in the Dean's office. It was a privilege to work with him.

I first met Skip back in 1979 when I joined 1st St. Margaret’s Scout Group as an 11-year-old boy. It was Peter’s first year at the helm of the ‘yellow and red’. To this day, 1st St. Margaret’s is going strong due to Skip’s leadership. Over his many years in scouting, Skip taught countless youth the importance of community, camaraderie, and enjoying the great outdoors. The many hours (thousands!) that Skip put in behind the scenes organizing the many and varied adventures that positively impacted so many is a testament to Peter’s selfless nature. My sincere condolences to Wendy, Darryl, and family. Peter will be deeply missed.

I was in the Cathedral cub troop when Peter and David Crowther were it’s leaders. It is curious to think now that at that time they were only in their twenties, and speaks well of Peter’s priorities to know that he stayed with his commitment to scouting throughout his life. I remember we once went to a fishing lodge on the Mirimachi, some twenty of us for canoeing, and hiking in the very region where the Dumbarton Whooper was known to live. The lodge had been left to the Cathedral , and Peter made good use of it. He was such a good man. My sympathies to his family, and a life well lived. Andrew Bruce Nutter

Wendy and Darryl, Peter’s untimely death is conjuring up so many happy memories for me. In so many ways, Peter was the person at UNB who opened my eyes to the world by helping me to establish the alumni travel program. Gisèle and I were fortunate to travel with Peter to Rome on two occasions. His intense love for Rome and its history, not to mention a good gelato and cup of espresso, was contagious. I will forever have the images of our group riding bicycles through the streets of Ancient Rome on a quiet Sunday morning. I had such fondness for Peter. His death leaves a void in my life. Gisèle joins me in expressing our deepest condolences to you both.

My fondest memory of Peter was the magical 3 weeks I spent with him and his students who were taking a credit history course in Rome, 2006. Peter made sure we could navigate on our own in the city and insured we learned enough Italian to survive. That trip was a dream come true made possible by Peter’s love of Rome and Italian history. May he walk through those ancient ruins in peace. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Upon moving here from Nova Scotia a decade ago Peter was one of the first people from Scouting to look me up and shake my left hand.. We had several conversations and it was evident that Peter was a man with a mission. Sharing a few stories with him was a pleasurable Scouting memory. So Peter will now join that circle of Scouters sharing a their Last Campfire.

Mr. Kent or Skip as he was affectionately known, by my three sons, was instrumental in providing such rich experiences for our young people . Be it trips to Kananaskis, Wales or PEI for jamborees or a campfire at Yoho Lake, or an adventure at Acadia Park, USA , a climb up Mt. Katadin or even voyage St. Pierre Miquelon . He mentored in so many ways re community service and importance of citizenship. As a parent I am very grateful. Rest in peace PK

I have many fond memories of Peter particularly when he served as Dean of Arts and I as Dean of Science at UNB. I always respected Peter's comments at the Board of Deans and at UNB Senate Meetings. Perhaps not much is known that Peter and I travelled to Oshkosh Wisconsin and negotiated an exchange agreement between the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh faculties of Arts and Science and those at UNB. We also travelled together to New Orleans to represent our faculties to the Association of Deans of Arts and Science of the US. .

Peter and I first became friends through the Boy Scouts as teenage leaders of the 2nd Fredericton (Christ Church Cathedral) troop. What is truly surprising is that a core of scouts from that troop continued to remain connected with Peter, and with me by association, until the present day. The Miramichi Pioneers as they are called from their camping/pioneering days on the Miramichi, are now retired men in their late 70s and 80s, a tribute to Peter’s role in its foundation and continued promotion. Peter’s interest and contribution to scouting over the years is well known. It was a lifelong relationship.
We attended university together. In the mid 50’s university terms were a year long allowing plenty of time for extra-curricular activities. While he was never a singer – he would protest that fact – he shared fully in the musical life of the university, playing the drum in the UNB Band and joining in the festivities of Winter Carnival, Spring Prom and sharing a spot in one of Stephen Patterson’s musicals.
Peter and I shared trips together in the years after university While he was studying in England I joined him for a lengthy trip through rural England, Wales, and Scotland. Of course, we had to camp wherever possible although on one occasion I do remember staying in a guest house where I was convinced former visitors were plastered behind the walls. I remember the sheep in Wales, and their consonant sounding bleating. In the days before superhighways and with a tiny English car and massive roadmaps, it was quite a memorable undertaking. The trip to Virginia in a 1960’s Volkswagen that could never get over 40 mph going up a hill and camping in ‘snake-infested” rural Virginia (Peter hated snakes), could never be repeated today.
We had parallel careers, never intentional but just worked out that way. Peter’s academic career was distinguished. He was an inspiring teacher, a most capable administrator and earned the respect of colleagues and the university community.
While Peter and I lived separate lives in different parts of the country and only met occasionally after we both retired, the close bonds of youth and indeed of a lifetime made our relationship special. And to that I include Wendy. They were for me very dear friends I could visit every time I came to Fredericton. They were “family” I shall visit again but will miss the dear friend who made those Fredericton visits so very special.

I was just thinking gratefully of my year of studying Canadian history at UNB in, must have been 1967? 68? after LSE? with him. It was an uplifting and challenging course, one of the few I really loved, and him from afar as engaging prof. Meaningful content. Was thinking- wonder if he s still around as I have now questions he could answer. No one seems to know much about it today.
Well. Too late.
So sorry for his family. Life well lived. He made a forever difference in mine.
Thank you, Dr Kent.

I meet Peter when he came to the 2nd Fredericton Scout Group where he became one of the Scout Leaders with the rest of us, things took off with Charley Slane, Bill Turney, Peter and Myself with the first Pioneer camp on Barnaby's Island and went onward to the late Sixty's. After Peter came back from Europe I was able to see him again as he became active again with Scouts Canada as I was also. We had discussions and memories of what we took part in over the past. He was so natural in his ways that it was always a pleasure to sit with him and have a cup of tea. I will sorely miss him. To you Wendy and your Family, God Bless.

My first encounter with PK was in my teens, as one of many participants in the never-to-be-forgotten Miramichi Pioneering camp. It brought me to his residence suit at UNB -- he must have been a don -- and I can still see the biographies of Gladstone and Disraeli on his shelves. Many years later I was able to do some errands for his Strax book. First and last he was a gentleman.
