Obituary of Peter Clifford Kent

It is with sadness that the family of Peter Clifford Kent announces his death at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Monday, June 19, 2023 at the age of 84. Born in St. John’s, NL, on July 11, 1938, he was the son of the late Clifford and Lois (Flower) Kent.

Peter leaves behind his wife, Wendy (Preece) Kent; son, Darryl Kent (Joe Ann); cousins, Margaret Ann Corbett (Helen Burst), Robert Corbett (Janet), Mike McMann (Pat Randal), Janet Hawkins (Christopher), and Mary Jane Case (Gary); furry canine friend, Livia. In addition to his parents, Clifford and Lois, Peter was predeceased by his cousin, Jim Golding.

Peter was a dedicated educator and community volunteer. He married Wendy in 1969 in Fredericton and had a son, Darryl, in 1973. Peter's educational journey included attending Montreal’s Lower Canada College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Brunswick, and obtaining a MSC and Ph.D. in History from the London School of Economics. He taught history at the University of New Brunswick and eventually became the Dean of Arts at the same institution. Peter's commitment to education extended to his involvement in the Scouting movement in the Fredericton region from 1958 to present day. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity and his lasting impact on the lives of his students and community.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held from Christ Church Cathedral on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 11:00 am with The Very Rev. Geoffrey Hall officiating.
