It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved family man and accomplished professional, Christoph Jacob Brodbeck, who departed from this world on December 22nd, 2023, in Fredericton, NB, surrounded by the love of his family. Chris left behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and an extraordinary career spanning 68 years as a distinguished lumber broker. Born in Switzerland on October 22nd, 1933, to Christoph and Klara Brodbeck, he was the eldest of three children.
Chris is survived by the love of his life, Sharon Crabbe and their adored blended family of five: Chris Brodbeck (Nimali) Toronto, Tom Brodbeck (Annette) Winnipeg, Eric Brodbeck (Jennifer) Montreal, Lindsay LePage (Brian) Fredericton, and Lisa LePage (Brandon) Fredericton. Chris will be missed by his eleven grandchildren: Noella Brodbeck Turk, Ginger Gamage Brodbeck, Ellington Gamage Brodbeck, Chantal Brodbeck, Jacob Brodbeck, Justin Brodbeck (Emily), Nicholas Brodbeck, Alex Brodbeck, Sarah Brodbeck, Nicholas Harvey, and Olivia Harvey. Chris is also survived by his siblings: Niklaus Brodbeck, Montreal and Kungold Schneiter (Freddy), Switzerland, in addition to his first wife Diane Wattier, who remained very close to the entire family.
Chris was a devoted husband, loving father, and a cherished grandfather. His family meant the world to him, and his unwavering commitment to their happiness and well-being was felt by all. Chris created a foundation filled with love, laughter and enduring memories, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.
Professionally, Chris carved out an illustrious career as a lumber broker, showcasing unparalleled dedication and expertise in the industry. For an astounding 68 years, he navigated the ups and downs of the lumber industry with exceptional skill and acumen, retiring at the age of 89 after receiving the Person of the Year Award from the Maritime Lumber Bureau. His passion for his work was infectious, and he built lasting relationships with colleagues and clients alike. Chris was a pillar of integrity, known for his honesty, reliability, and the genuine care he exhibited in every business transaction he made. He will be forever remembered and admired for his work ethic, resilience, and sense of fairness.
Away from the hustle and the bustle of the industry, Chris found solace in the simple pleasures of life. Summers on the Tobique, surrounded by family and friends, good food and good conversation, is when Chris was in his element. He was a world traveler and loved the outdoors, finding joy in nature and appreciating the beauty around him. Whether walking in Odell Park with his close friend Doug Wright or taking drives “out back” with his son-in-law Brandon, Chris embraced all life had to offer with enthusiasm and appreciation. His interest in politics, current affairs and the economy also sparked many discussions, especially when seated around his beloved campfires.
Chris was a great conversationalist, always interested in the lives and careers of others. Mike Jennings, a colleague with whom Chris shared a special connection, was a key source in those captivating conversations. The bond between Mike and Chris, kindled by their shared love of the lumber business, added a distinctive touch to their friendship.
A celebration of life to honour and remember Christoph Jacob Brodbeck will be held on Monday, January 15th, 2024, at the Wu Conference Center, UNB, Fredericton, from 1:30pm – 4:00pm. Rest in peace beautiful soul.
