Obituary of Harvey Malmberg

It is with great sadness that the family of Harvey Malmberg announces his passing on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at Shannex Frederick Hall, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Harvey was born in Newcastle, New Brunswick, on September 22, 1928, the youngest son of the late Aage and Lucy (Major) Malmberg.

He is survived by his three children, Anne (Joe Gushue), Peter, and Sarah (Charles McCormick); grandchildren, Bridget (Patrick), Joseph (Emily), Patrick, Elizabeth (Justin), Anna, Erin, and William; great-grandchildren, Isla, Connor, Emery, and Poppy, as well as relatives in Ontario, British Columbia, and Denmark. Harvey was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth (Cronk) in 2022. And his brothers, Arthur in 2014 and Godfrey killed in action in 1945.

Harvey graduated from Harkins High School in Newcastle in 1946 and attended UNB as a Lord Beaverbrook Scholar, earning his B.A. in 1950 and his B.Ed. in 1951. He began his extensive career in education as a teacher and principal at Grand Manan High School, followed by Port Elgin Regional School. He attended the University of Alberta as a Kellogg Fellow and obtained his M.Ed. in 1959. Returning to New Brunswick, he was principal of Hubbard Avenue School, Oromocto. In 1962, following his post graduate studies at the Institute of Education in London, England, he spent 7 years as the Director of Curriculum for the New Brunswick Department of Education and 5 years as an Associate Professor of Education at UNB Fredericton. Beginning in 1974, Harvey served as the English Deputy Minister of Education for the Province of New Brunswick, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1988.

Harvey had many interests and was a member of several groups including the Vestry of Christ Church (Parish) Church, the Fredericton Public Library Board, the UNB Alumni Association, the School Days Museum and the Fredericton Golden K Club.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff of both Frederick Hall and Shannex Regent Hall, Fredericton, for their compassionate care of Harvey following Elizabeth’s passing.
