Obituary of Marjorie Lottie Rouse

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Marjorie Lottie (Mitton) Rouse announces her passing at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital on April 3, 2020 at the age of 86 after a courageous fight with Parkinson’s disease. Born on December 18, 1933 in Sussex, NB she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lottie (Bonnell) Mitton. She is survived by her loving husband Paul of 62 years, children Michael (Kirsten) of St. Andrews, David (Deborah) of Fredericton, Carol of Grand Cayman, and Nancy of Fredericton, and grandchildren Christopher (Susan), Jason, Jeffrey and Jane; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews, and sisters- in-law Gladys Kennedy and Charline Smith. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Norval (Glennie) and John. After graduating from Sussex High School, Mom joined the NB Department of Public Works as a secretary where she met her future husband, our dad, Paul Rouse. They were married on September 28, 1957 and together raised the four of us: Michael, David, Carol and Nancy. Mom enjoyed life in Fredericton. Her family meant everything to her and her friends were not far behind. Mom always found time to help anyone in need and give her time to many causes. She was very involved with the Ladies Auxiliary at Brunswick St. Baptist Church, making soup for the Soup Kitchen and canvassing for various charities around her beloved 831 Smythe Street neighbourhood. Her career outside the home included working with the Welcome Wagon, World Book Encyclopedia and as the secretary for the Fredericton Rotary Club for many years for which she was honoured by being made a Paul Harris Fellow. She was always quick to invite anyone who found themselves away from home over for home cooked meals with her family. Her thoughtfulness and kindness in putting others before herself was a trait she maintained throughout her life. Her friendliness and sense of humour was appreciated by friends and family. Mom lived an active life, curling with friends, jogging, and walking. She took up golf in her 60’s which she really enjoyed. She was a lifelong bridge player enjoying a win (when she had good cards) but loving the friendships with those she played. In raising our family she enjoyed taking us to her parent’s farm in Penobsquis, going on summer vacations to Skowhegan ME, leisure and shopping trips with friends, and especially the many family get-togethers at her home featuring her famous turkey dinners, mustard pickles, brown bread and homemade pies. She was a proud grandmother and really enjoyed watching all her grandchildren’s sports. We wish to thank Dr. Jeff Barton for his care and support over the last several years, as well as the staff at Shannex and Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for their care over these difficult last days. A Celebration of Life will be held at Brunswick St. Baptist Church at a later time.
