Obituary of LeRoy McGinn
It is with sadness and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of LeRoy McGinn on September 24, 2024. Born in Fredericton on April 7, 1938, to Clement and Stella (nee Toner) McGinn. LeRoy was the second of six children, growing up alongside his sisters Eva and Wendy, and brothers Don, Doug, and Brian.
LeRoy’s passion for education and athletics was evident throughout his life. He earned a Physical Education degree from UNB in 1961 and a Master of Education from Boston College in 1977. His career was dedicated to supporting vulnerable students. Whether teaching swimming, curling, various ball games, or lawn bowling, LeRoy’s enthusiasm was infectious. He cherished a good card game and was often the last to leave the dance floor. His weekly pool games were a highlight, where he shared humour and cookies with close friends.
LeRoy and his loving wife Frances also had a love for travel. He and Frances explored Europe, Alaska, the US, and the Caribbean, always in search of adventure and long-lost relatives. Although he and Frances loved to travel, particularly their trips to Ireland, he also found equal joy at home, tending to his garden and watching his plants grow. He often said, “I had an incredible life.”
LeRoy leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Frances (nee Reid), and their six children: Mary (Peter), Jane (Al), Veronica (Chris), Jared (Angie), Brendan (Beckie), and Nasnan. His legacy extends to 20 grandchildren and their partners: Skene (Sophany), Aaron (Bette), Grace (Colin), Madeleine (Tom), Tommy (Ghazal), Abby (Matt), Garret, Reid (Alex), Charlotte (Alex), Keenan (Meghan), Reece (Erin), Kelsie (Tim), Seth, Robyn, Ethan, Gillian (Jacob), Bessie (Scott), Joey, Harrison (Jillian), and Anna. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Eloise, William, Julian, Béya, Maeve, and Oscar.
Frances and family extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Lauren Wiley, Dr. Kate Hadley, and the staff at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, especially the palliative care nurses and doctors who provided compassionate and professional care. LeRoy had a unique ability to connect personally with everyone who entered his room.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 1st, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York St., Fredericton, NB.
