Obituary of Carl Reed Smyth
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carl Reed Smyth, who passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024. Born in Rivière-Verte, New Brunswick, on November 30, 1936, Carl was the only child of Alphee Smyth and Simone (Carroll) Smyth.
In 1958, Carl married the love of his life, Carmel (Bray), and together they shared a beautiful journey of love and family. They were blessed with seven children: Kevin Smyth (Heidi), Brian Smyth (Mary), Carol Green (Ralston), Shawn Smyth (Celestine), Maureen Smyth (deceased), Paul Smyth (Tracey), and Darlene Smyth (Warren Liu). Carl was a devoted grandfather to 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
At the age of 33, Carl made the courageous decision to return to university to pursue his passion for architecture at Nova Scotia Technical College (later Dalhousie University). Over the course of four years, Carl and his family commuted between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as he completed his studies and work terms. His dedication paid off as he enjoyed a rewarding career in architecture for over 50 years, a profession he felt truly fortunate to practice.
Carl was deeply touched by the many letters and cards he received from friends, colleagues, and residents of Fredericton. These notes, filled with stories of shared experiences or heartfelt thanks, often expressed admiration for his architectural designs and contributions to the community Their words were a great source of comfort and joy to him.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECH) for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion during Carl's final days.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date when the family is able to gather.
