Obituary of Mina Lolita "Loie: Smith
It is with great sadness that the family of Mina Lolita “Loie” Smith announce her peaceful passing in her home on Sunday, January 12th, 2025. Born in Fredericton, NB, she was the daughter and only child of the late Nathaniel "Nat" Smith and the late Mina (Beyea) Smith.
Loie graduated from Fredericton High in 1959 with a 2nd prize for Overall Standing, a Chemistry prize and the Black “F” Honours award. She graduated from UNB with a Bachelor in Science in 1963 and a Bachelor of Education in 1964. Loie taught high school Science for 33 years (28 years in Dalhousie, NB) retiring to Fredericton in 1997. Loie loved reading, listening to music, gardening and preserving the produce from her gardens.
Loie loved cats. She welcomed many cats over the years and they enriched her life and brought her much joy. Singing has been a lifelong passion for Loie. Loie was one of the first to attend the Diocesan Choir School attending its first 2 years. She was in the junior choir at St. Anne’s. She was in the York Singers for approximately 10 years.
Loie was a member of St. Mary’s Church Choir in Dalhousie and after retiring to Fredericton she has been a faithful and beloved member of the choir at Christ Church (Parish) Church. She was also a devoted lay reader for many years.
Loie is survived by several cousins on both the Smith and Beyea sides of her family.
In particular a deep bond was formed with the family of her cousin Peter (Camella) Smith and their sons Donald (Mary) and Stephen and their extended family Victoria (Charles), Samantha (Peter) and Holly Anne (Jake). Many wonderful memories were formed around the dining table at holiday dinners. This past summer we were blessed to have almost all the family home at the same time and Loie got to spend time with the youngest members of the family.
Loie, you will be missed.
