Obituary of Cathy Ann Scott

Survived by husband Tom Henderson; children Matthew Henderson (Kristina), Jessie Scott-Henderson, Mharie Scott-Henderson; grandson Kieran; brothers Brian and David; sisters Marilyn and Lois Mitchell. Predeceased by parents Robert and Joan (Smallwood) Scott. Cathy was a graduate of Fredericton High School, Mount Allison University (Music), and the University of California (Education). She was halfway through her Master of Divinity program at McGill University (Presbyterian College) when her intent to become a Presbyterian Minister was disrupted by the Cancer that would take her life. Cathy’s career in education began with special needs teaching in California, and was followed by teaching children and young adults in the Oromocto, New Brunswick area where she led the music program in several schools for 10 years and then began teaching family studies. She was integral in developing and supporting campaigns and activities promoting inclusion and anti-bullying. Cathy was actively involved in her church, St. James Presbyterian, Hanwell, where she led the choir and provided pulpit supply. She also shared her gifts for ministry by leading worship throughout the Saint John River Valley area as a lay preacher and serving as student minister at St. Paul’s Presbyterian, Woodstock. The energy, enthusiasm, and obvious joy she had in leading worship will be greatly missed. Cathy was an accomplished musician (clarinet), an avid nature lover, Girl Guide leader, horsewoman, and doll collector. Most recently, she very much enjoyed roleplaying in Dungeons and Dragons games as a player and game master while travelling to different cities for their events. Her effervescent and outgoing personality contributed to her many enduring friendships, and to her ability to encourage others to learn and to really experience life – evident even while undergoing radiation treatments. The family thanks everyone for their prayers and support over the past weeks and months. We appreciate all of the assistance that we have received. A private family interment will be held in the Hanwell Presbyterian Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, donations in Cathy's memory can be made to St. James Presbyterian Church in Hanwell, NB, Breast Cancer Society of Canada, Fredericton Hospice House, or a charity of the donor's choice.
